"I found out a lot from your visit my favourite
part was when we got to hold and wear your armour . I enjoyed
finding out more about the Romans especially because somebody
was telling us about them and we didn't have to find out from
books..."
A visit from a 'real' Roman soldier is
an experience that most children enjoy immensely and few forget.
There can be no better way of enhancing a child's experience
and understanding of the period than by literally bringing the
past to life. The opportunities for enhancing the curriculum and
for promoting follow up work are obvious.
A number of RMRS members specialise in school talks
for children. These normally last half a day and are tailored
to the requirements of the individual school. Classes and year
groups of up to 90 children and all years from KS2 to Sixth Form
can be catered for, although the smaller the numbers, the more
opportunities there are for children have to gain hands on experience
of Roman military life.
Society speakers will arrive fully accoutred with
museum quality weapons and equipment and in role. Presentations
could include discussion of a soldier's life, dress, weapons
and equipment; battle tactics, including a battle line of children;
food, religion and anything else the school requires! Questions
are encouraged and time usually set aside at the end to meet the
children personally and allow them to try on helmets, etc. under
supervision.
Incidentally, we are very attuned to safety issues
and the weapons themselves are always handled with the greatest
possible care.
If you would like to benefit from one of our visiting
speakers, please either contact one of the members listed below
or email us

you!
